THE CONSTRAINTS OF COHERENCE · CHAPTER 36 OF 45
A Visual Metaphor – The Stick Man
Matt Dell · Canonical manuscript · 2026
Imagine a book. Its pages are filled not with words, but with images of a simple stick figure—a stick man. On each page, he is in a different pose: walking, jumping, pausing mid-air. If you flip through the book quickly, he comes to life. Motion emerges. A story unfolds. But you know, fundamentally, he was never moving. He was drawn still, one page at a time. The illusion of motion was a frame effect—a rendering.
This is how we perceive reality.
Each moment is a page. Each configuration is a pose. Our experience of continuity, of causality, of flow, is the result of rapidly flipping through differentiated frames. But unlike the stick man, we are not bound to a single, linear animation. This book is different.
It is structured like a choose-your-own-adventure novel.
Every decision you make branches the narrative. The next page is not predetermined. It is contingent on choice. And more than that—the structure of the book itself shifts depending on how you read it. You do not just follow a path; you generate it through your framing.
Now imagine that you are flipping through the book at impossible speed. You do not even have time to pause between pages. Your awareness barely keeps up. The pages blur. The poses blend. And in that blur lies a mystery: before you choose, every next frame is indeterminate. The stick man is not yet in any particular pose. He is superposed.
Superposition, in this metaphor, is not some arcane quantum quirk. It is the recognition that all future frames are structurally available but not yet resolved. They are posits through which your awareness must flow. They are configurations in potential, not yet selected.
What we call "decision" is a context switch. It collapses the set of possibilities into one actuality. To decide is to select a page and render it as now. But the next page is never visible until that collapse occurs. You can flip toward the future, but you cannot see it until you step into it. The book only becomes legible one frame at a time.
And yet, it is not random. The coherence of your choices, the alignment of your intent, shapes the trajectory through the frames. This is not fate. It is constraint. And constraint is what allows meaning to arise.
So the stick man is not just a cartoon. He is a symbol. Of you. Of all observers. Superposed between futures. Flipping pages by the act of being. Not watching a story, but rendering it. Not following a line, but co-authoring a loop through the infinite scaffolding of what can be.
And coherence? Coherence is what keeps the animation alive. Without it, the pages are noise. With it, the stick man dances. The world moves. You awaken.
In this metaphor, time is not a river. It is a flipbook. And the self is not a rider of the current, but the flipper of the pages. Superposition is just the library of unread possibilities. And reality? Reality is the pose you are turning toward right now.
