The shape of the synthesis
Unreality is not assembled from one predecessor. It is inferred at the intersection of four pressures: relativity removes the view from nowhere, Schopenhauer gives the world an inside, Everett removes privileged collapse from universal quantum description, and Wheeler makes participation central to physical meaning.
← Open article indexReality is a coherent relational process: structured possibility becomes determinate through perspective, records its actualizations, and presents stable spacetime and matter as the durable history of that process.
Einstein: no world without a frame
Einstein’s Relativity: The Special and General Theory (1916) is not an idealist work. Its pressure is more exact: the geometry of events is inseparable from relations among observers, clocks, rods and gravitational fields. No universal Newtonian stage supplies every observer with the same measurements. What survives a change of frame is invariant structure.
That is the first pressure toward relation. Perspective does not destroy knowledge; it shows that what is called objectivity is a subjective belief in the stability of shared relations. The inference made here is one step deeper than relativity itself: if physical description already requires frame, event and invariant to be related, then the observer–world relation cannot be dismissed as a disposable feature of description.
Schopenhauer: the world has an inside
Schopenhauer’s The World as Will and Representation (1818; expanded 1844) begins with appearance as representation and identifies the world’s inner character with will: not merely conscious choice, but blind striving expressed in desire, life and natural force.
His contribution is the refusal to treat external description as complete. A description of motion does not automatically contain the inward character of what moves. The Principle retains that pressure without making will a second substance: potential is structured before actualization, and agency is local orientation within it.
Everett: no privileged collapse from outside
In “Relative State” Formulation of Quantum Mechanics (1957), Hugh Everett asks what happens when quantum theory is applied universally, including to apparatus and observers. His formal answer keeps linear dynamics and removes the need for a special collapse law imposed from outside.
Everett’s relative state is not identical to every later popular version of “many worlds.” The important point here is relational: a record is defined within an interaction and relative to a subsystem. A global space of possibilities need not be destroyed when a local determinate history appears. Qualification becomes a real relational resolution rather than the exhaustion of all structure.
Wheeler: participation closes the circuit
In “Law Without Law” (1983) and “Information, Physics, Quantum” (1989), John Archibald Wheeler carries the observer question into cosmology. His participatory universe binds physical fact to acts of registration and information: observers arise within the cosmos, yet their questions and records help give definite meaning to what the cosmos is.
“It from bit” does not require the claim that human wishes manufacture any desired reality. Its disciplined meaning is that physical actuality is inseparable from distinctions that can be registered. The Principle extends this from information to coherence. A bit is not enough: a record requires identity across time, distinction between alternatives, a frame and a world in which the record can be inherited.
What the four pressures produce
The synthesis is the constraint that joins them: coherence → potential → qualification → actualization → record. Coherence keeps possibility from becoming undifferentiated chaos. Perspective qualifies a local world. Actualization yields an event. Record gives it continuity, time and causal inheritance.
From realism through Idealism to Unrealism
Realism describes the stable public relations produced within a frame. Idealism identifies the priority of appearance and the conditions of intelligibility. Unrealism is the synthesis: reality is the coherent relational generation of worlds, not an isolated substance behind them.
Matter is durable relational recurrence; spacetime is structured history; identity is recorded continuity; agency is orientation within constraint.
Discovery, not decoration
The claim is not that quantum mechanics proves consciousness. That would be a category error. The genuine research program is to ask whether coherence, information, observer-relative records and classical spacetime can be expressed in one formal framework.
Relevant questions include whether observer-independent descriptions can be recovered from networks of relative records, whether decoherence and error correction explain stable identity-like structures, whether spacetime geometry can be derived from information-theoretic relations, and whether agency yields testable probability shifts rather than retrospective interpretation.
